چکیده

Combined with X-ray imaging and spectral data, observations of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (SZE) can be used to determine direct distances to galaxy clusters. These distances are independent of the extragalactic distance ladder and do not rely on clusters being standard candles or rulers. Observations of the SZE have progressed from upper limits to high signal-to-noise ratio detections and imaging of the SZE. SZE/X-ray determined distances to galaxy clusters are beginning to trace out the theoretical angular-diameter distance relation. The current ensemble of 41 SZE/X-ray distances to galaxy clusters imply a Hubble constant of H0 ≈ 61±3±18 km s−1 Mpc−1, where the uncertainties are statistical followed by systematic at 68% confidence. With a sample of high-redshift galaxy clusters, SZE/X-ray distances can be used to measure the geometry of the Universe.

Re-examination of the Hubble Constant from the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect: Implication for Cosmological Parameters

We performed a systematic and comprehensive estimate of the Hubble constant H0 via the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich temperature decrement and the X-ray measurements for clusters up to the redshift z = 0.541, with particular attention to its dependence on the density parameter Ω0, and the cosmological constant λ0. The resulting values of H0 are largely consistent with that derived from the Cepheid distanc...

Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. Ii. Inclusion of Peculiar Velocities

We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect to the system moving with a velocity ~ β ≡ ~v/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. In the present formalism, the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect for the cluster of galaxies with a peculiar velocity ~ β is derived in a straightforward manner by the Lorentz boost of the generalized Kompaneets...

Systematic Errors in the Hubble Constant Measurement from the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect

The Hubble constant estimated from the combined analysis of the SunyaevZel’dovich effect and X-ray observations of galaxy clusters is systematically lower than those from other methods by 10-15 percent. We examine the origin of the systematic underestimate using an analytic model of the intracluster medium (ICM), and compare the prediction with idealistic triaxial models and with clusters extra...

Galaxy Clusters: Oblate or Prolate?

It is now well known that a combined analysis of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect and the X-ray emission observations can be used to determine the angular diameter distance to galaxy clusters, from which the Hubble constant is derived. Given that the SZ/X-ray Hubble constant is determined through a geometrical description of clusters, the accuracy to which such distance measurements can be ma...

Effect of Gravitational Lensing on Measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect

The Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect of a cluster of galaxies is usually measured after background radio sources are removed from the cluster field. Gravitational lensing by the cluster potential leads to a systematic deficit in the residual intensity of unresolved sources behind the cluster core relative to a control field far from the cluster center. As a result, the measured decrement in the R...
